We believe VeraSun's emissions of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxides
are of special concern because they threaten the water quality of our lakes, and the health of our
residents. Emissions of these two pollutants would be much higher than any other manufacturer in Kosciusko County. According to the
Environmental Protection Agency, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxides
are of special concern because they:
•travel over long distances and be can deposited far from
the point of origin, meaning problems with these emissions are not
confined to areas where they are emitted.
•react with moisture in the air to create toxic
chemicals such as sulfuric acid
•deteriorate water quality by acidifying lakes and streams
•contribute to formation of ground ozone and smog
•aggravate respiratory illnesses such as asthma, especially
in children and the elderly
•aggravate existing heart disease

Application filed with the Indiana Department of Environmental
Management on January 10, 2007. The application is available
for viewing at the Milford Public Library.
VeraSun emissions data published by us prior to January 12, 2007
was collected from a
Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Environmental Assessment.
That assessment was conducted for VeraSun Energy's Welcome, Minnesota refinery.
VeraSun's website
describes the Welcome refinery as a "greenfield", and says it will be
"among the most environmentally-friendly in the industry".
Emissions data for Syracuse/Milford area industry was collected from
Indiana Department of Environmental Management, Pending and Issued Air Permits
